The Basics of Fats

When it comes to diet and nutrition, you may think of fats as a bad thing. This is not always the case. The key is to recognize which fats are bad and which ones are good.

Bad fats are often found in foods that include refined sugar. These sugars break down quickly and turn to fat in the body. This is how unwanted weight is gained.

Fats contain fatty acids. The main differences are determined by those acids. One great example is olive oil. It contains mostly oleic acid. Corn oil, on the other hand, is made up mostly of linoleum acid. Olive oil is the healthiest to use when cooking.

Fish, vegetable and many food oils contain different types of acids. Fish and vegetable oils are better for you than other oils.

Fatty acids should not be confused with fats. Fatty acids are chains of carbons with hydrogens attached. Individual fatty acids serve various purposes in the body. Some are burned to make energy while others are structural features of cells.

When searching for fats to incorporate into your diet and nutrition plan, avoid the sugars and trans-fats while concentrating on those that contain fatty acids like those mentioned above. Your body needs a certain amount of fat to remain healthy and function as it should. As you exercise your body will need plenty of nutrients. Foods that contain good fats contain these nutrients.

As you build muscle mass, your muscles need to be fed. This means providing them with fruits, vegetables and other foods that contain good fats. As you incorporate these foods into your diet, you will begin noticing a difference in how you feel. Instead of receiving a spurt of energy that only lasts a short period of time, you will experience a higher level of metabolism that will last you all day.

When you combine the healthy fats with exercise, your body will respond favorably to the routine you have established. The key is to stick to it. Instead of eating fried foods and taking in fats that aren't good for you, give your body fats that can be used in a positive manner.

Stay away from many saturated fats as they are unhealthy and are great contributors to high cholesterol and the conditions it causes. Unsaturated fats do not increase cholesterol and are a great source of energy.

When it comes to finding the right fats, it is a good idea to always the nutritional value on the foods you buy. The success of your diet and nutrition plan will depend on this. You can exercise faithfully every day, but if you aren't eating the right types of fats, you won't see positive results. Since the objective is to take in fewer calories than you are burning, or, as is the case if you are trying to maintain your current weight, to even it out, you want to avoid fatty foods that are high in calories. Taking in the good fats will have the opposite effect and you will find yourself looking and feeling better all around.
