Clothing and Equipment for Walking
Author: Mark Sutro
There are four essential items of clothing and equipment you will need for walking:
- Walking Shoes: These are shoes that should fit comfortably, have a flexible sole and plenty of toe room.
- Walking Socks: Be sure to wear the socks you are going to walk in when trying on your walking shoes. There are many socks that are made specifically for walking and these are going to work far better than standard cotton socks. Your feet will be much more comfortable, stay drier and be much more likely to stay blister free.
- Clothing: To begin with, wear what is comfortable for you. There are many fabrics that can make walking more comfortable. Keep in simple to start. On cold days, layer your clothing so items can be removed as you warm up. On sunny days, add a hat, sunscreen and sun glasses.
- Water Carrier: Be sure to drink plenty of water. Strive to take a drink every 10 minutes or so. There are many convenient water carriers from waist packs to shoulder carriers. Choose what works best for you.
