Aerobic activity is an essential part of overall fitness. While strength training is just as essential and should be performed regularly, the aerobic part of your routine is what will burn calories and count toward a healthy heart.

There are many types of aerobic activity so choosing one you enjoy won’t be a problem. They include: fast walking, jogging, running, riding a bike, swimming or a regular aerobic routine that can be accomplished in one place.

Walking is one of the best exercises you can incorporate into your regular fitness routine. It gets your heart rate up and allows you to be outdoors for several minutes at a time. Some people choose to walk a specific distance each day while others may walk a specified amount of time. Either way, you should keep up with your distance so you will be able to increase it as time goes by. You must walk fast in order to keep your heart rate up. This will condition your legs while helping the rest of your body become more in shape.

Running is another great exercise. This is considered to be a higher impact exercise becomes it is harder on your joints. You may choose to run faster, thus affording you the opportunity to build strength and endurance over a shorter period of time while covering a long distance, or you may wish to jog. Jogging isn’t as vigorous as running because you aren’t moving as fast, but it is still quite effective and will keep the heart rate up and body moving.

Riding a bike is another exercise many people choose because it also enables them to be outside while completing the aerobic part of a fitness routine. If you are new to riding a bike for exercise, you might wish to begin on flat terrain and work your way up to hills and tougher ground. This is another great strength training exercise that will keep the hart beating quickly.

Swimming is an exercise that works many different muscles in your body all at once. You may choose to swim laps at your local gym or in your own swimming pool. Either way, you will reap many benefits from choosing this as your aerobic workout.
