When you think of the best body you could possibly have, what comes to mind? Sure you think about your ideal weight and how your body looks, but do you ever stop to consider its functionality? Functional strength training focuses on how your body works and helping make it work better.

This doesn’t necessarily being the smallest size possible for your weight range or having the biggest muscles. What it does mean is acquiring a body that will do what it needs to without unnecessary aches and pains. You can accomplish this through a comprehensive fitness program that will be designed especially for you.

What is considered functional to you and your body may not be to the next person. One important part of functional weight training is knowing which exercises will help you. There are plenty out there to try so if you aren’t quite fond of one, never fear. There are others you will be able to choose.

Lifting weights is one very important aspect of strength training and is often incorporated into many fitness programs. When lifting weights at home, you will need to take the proper precautions.

Start out with weights that are not that heavy but will get the job done. Dumbbells can come in a pair of four pound weights. These are often great to begin with when doing various arm exercises.

Functional strength training is all about exercising your body using ordinary movements you work through each day. Such actions include: reaching, pushing and pulling. There are numerous others that are executed everyday.

Instead of doing curls and other specific strength training exercises that are used to make muscles bigger, you will need to perform exercises that allow you to do those everyday tasks. Those that involved reaching, pushing and pulling are a great idea.

One great example of this is a squatting exercise that requires you to bend your knees, lowering your body to the ground. You then pick up a weight which you have previously placed in front of you. This will help you the next time you bend to pick up that heavy laundry basket or a large box. It’s a natural movement you use everyday, so why not incorporate it into your fitness routine.

Once you have begun working through these exercises you can increase the amount of weight you use.
