The Rules of Strength Training

If you have never lifted weights before, there are several rules you should be aware of before you begin your new fitness regimen. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, be sure to check with your doctor before ever lifting weights as such physical activity may be prohibited in some cases.

When starting out, begin with a workout program that works all three muscle groups non-consecutively three days a week. This will ensure all muscles groups are worked out without putting too much strain on them.

Before lifting any weights, be sure to warm up. You can do this with five to ten minutes of light cardiovascular exercise or with warm-up sets of each exercise using a light to moderate weight. This will get your muscles primed and ready to go. Failing to do this can actually cause damage to your muscles so make sure it is a regular part of your fitness routine.

Choose one to two exercises for each muscle group. Do one to two sets containing eight to 16 repetitions of each. Since you are still a beginner, it may be a good idea to start with around 15 repetitions. Stick with that until you feel comfortable with the moves you are executing. Once you are comfortable you can increase the number of reps you do.

You may also choose to add more weight while reducing the number of reps if you want to take on a new challenge. By this time your muscles will have begun building strength.

If you choose to begin your fitness program in a gym, you may choose to start on the machines. This will provide more stabilization for the movements and help you get used to them.

Give yourself at least one day of rest. You may find you need more after the first workout so you can recover, so listen to your body. This is a very important aspect of any fitness program.

Consistency is the key. Though you may grow tired during the first days or weeks of your workout, don’t give up. You don’t want to over do it but you do want to keep going. Remember, it will all get easier after a while and before you know it you’ll feel as if you’ve been lifting weights your entire life.
